US District Court Decision Regarding Medicare Reimbursement

On Tuesday, November 3, 2015 the United States District Court for the District of Columbia handed down its decision regarding Medicare reimbursement for the costs of Christian Science nurses training programs. The Benevolent Association, joined by three other Christian Science nurses training programs–Arden Wood, Broadview, and The Leaves, began the appeal in 2009.

We were disappointed to learn that the court had ruled against Chestnut Hill Benevolent Association and in favor of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The decision was based on the insufficient accreditation standards of The Commission for Accreditation of Christian Science Nursing Organizations/Facilities, Inc. (Commission) which accredits the Benevolent Association’s Training School. In 2013 the Commission’s standards for Christian Science Nurses Training Schools were updated and strengthened. This did not impact the court’s decision as it is based on specific past years and the specific facts before the court.

Also, please note that the court’s decision does not affect payment for covered services provided to Medicare patients in Christian Science nursing facilities.
